Texas Takes the First Step to Revoking the Citizenship of the Children of Illegal Immigrants

From United press International comes a very positive development in what's left of the fight against the illegal immigrant invasion of the United States. Texas legislators are proposing a bill that would deny government benefits to the children of illegal immigrants. I believe courts have long misread the 14th Amendment to the Constitution in construing it to provide citizenship to the children of illegal immigrant parents. Even though this law faces certain legal challenge, that's a great thing, because it would force a court to examine squarely the issue of whether children of illegal immigrants born on U.S. soil should be granted U.S. citizenship.

"Texas lawmakers are considering a bill that would deny public services to illegal immigrants and take benefits away from their U.S. born children. Many Republicans and some Democrats in the state legislature have expressed support for the bill, which would be the first in the country to deny services to U.S. born children of immigrants, who by law are considered U.S. citizens, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday. The law is seen by some as a stepping stone towards revoking the citizenship of the children of illegal immigrants.

"The Texas bill could be a vehicle to get this before the courts, and we strongly support that," said Ira Mehlman, a spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform, which supports revision of the 14th Amendment to remove provisions granting citizenship to children of illegal immigrants. "There is no question that it is time for a review, given the number of people entering the country illegally and giving birth."

"A pregnant illegal alien can wait at the border, check into a hospital in Texas, give birth without paying a penny, and be rewarded for her illegal behavior," said Republican State Rep. Leo Berman, who authored the bill. "That's outrageous."
